Navigating friendships when your background feels so different from everyone else's

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever felt like you’re living in a world where everyone seems to have a shared cultural background, while you’re trying to find your place as a Third-Culture Kid? Many of us know that feeling all too well—being caught between cultures can make it hard to relate to friends who grew up in one place their whole lives. One thing that really helped me was finding other Third-Culture Kids in my area. It was such a relief to meet people who understood the unique blend of experiences we share, like the constant feeling of being “other” or the pressure to fit into multiple identities. We started meeting for coffee and it felt like a breath of fresh air to talk about our shared experiences, from navigating family expectations to dealing with the challenges of moving often. Having even one person who truly gets it can make a world of difference! Another approach that some of us find helpful is being open about our backgrounds when meeting new friends. It can be daunting to share our stories, but many times, it sparks genuine curiosity and connection. When you explain how your upbringing shaped your views or interests, it can lead to deeper conversations that go beyond surface-level small talk. You might even find that your differences are what make the friendship more vibrant and interesting. We should also remind ourselves that it’s okay to feel out of place sometimes. It’s completely normal to have days when we feel disconnected or misunderstood. When those moments hit, reaching out to someone who shares our background can be grounding. Just knowing that someone else has felt the same way can be comforting. Anyone else navigating friendships where your background feels so different? Sharing our stories can help us feel less isolated—what’s your experience been like?
