Navigating cultural holidays when you don't fully belong to any one culture

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Holidays can be such a mixed bag for many of us who identify as third-culture kids. While our friends and peers might dive headfirst into celebrations, we often find ourselves feeling like outsiders looking in. The excitement is palpable, yet there’s that nagging feeling of not fully belonging to any one culture, making these moments complex and sometimes lonely. One thing that has helped me is creating my own holiday traditions. Instead of trying to fit into the mold of what a certain celebration “should” look like, I’ve started blending elements from different cultures that resonate with me. For instance, during the winter holidays, I might combine dishes from my family's heritage with local favorites. This gives me a sense of ownership and makes the experience feel more authentic, even if it’s uniquely mine. Another approach many of us find useful is connecting with others who share similar experiences. I remember feeling isolated during one holiday season, but then I reached out to a few friends who also identify as third-culture kids. We decided to host a small gathering where we could share our stories and celebrate the holidays in our own way. Having that space to talk about our mixed feelings really transformed the holiday for me. It reminded me I wasn’t alone in this journey. It’s also important to acknowledge the emotions that come up during these times. It’s okay to feel a bit of sadness or confusion as you navigate the expectations of different cultures. Many of us deal with this internal tug-of-war, and it can be exhausting. Giving ourselves permission to feel these emotions without judgment is key. It can also help to share these feelings with someone who understands—sometimes just one real conversation can change everything. So, how do you all navigate these holidays? Anyone else feeling caught between cultures during this time? I’d love to hear how you’re celebrating or coping!
