Navigating family expectations as a Thevar — how do you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how tough it can be to navigate family expectations as a Thevar. There’s often this unspoken pressure to uphold traditions, excel in our careers, and maintain family honor. It can feel overwhelming, especially when our own personal goals or identities don’t quite fit into that mold. One thing that helped me was having honest conversations with my family about my aspirations. I started small, sharing my interests and how they might not align with the traditional path. While it wasn’t easy, those initial discussions opened the door for more understanding. I found that many of us can relate to the struggle of balancing our own dreams with familial duties, and just knowing I wasn’t alone made it a bit easier. Another approach I’ve found effective is finding a supportive community, whether it’s friends or peers who share similar experiences. Connecting with others who get the unique pressures of being Thevar has made a huge difference for me. We often share stories about family expectations, and just venting about it together brings a sense of relief. Some of us even set up regular meet-ups to discuss how to navigate these challenges together, and it’s comforting to know that we’re not facing it all alone. And let’s be real; the guilt can be heavy. We might feel like we're letting our families down when we choose a different path. It helps to remind ourselves that it’s okay to carve our own way, even if it looks different from what’s expected. Sometimes, just talking about these feelings with someone who understands can be a game changer. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you manage the expectations while staying true to yourself? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you along the way!
