Navigating friendships when you can't share your background with others

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know what it's like to navigate friendships while holding back a huge part of ourselves. Being stateless or Bidoon often means we carry layers of complexity that can make it tough to connect with others on a deeper level. It’s not that we don’t want to share our backgrounds; it’s just that it can feel risky or overwhelming. One thing that really helped me was finding a small circle of friends who I sensed were open-minded and empathetic. I didn’t dive into my background right away, but I slowly started sharing pieces of my experience. Just having those conversations, even about everyday topics, helped build a trust that made it easier to be more open later on. It was reassuring to know they were there, ready to listen when I felt comfortable enough to reveal my story. Another approach many of us find beneficial is creating safe spaces for ourselves, even if that means starting online. We can use platforms or groups where sharing our identities feels less daunting. Engaging with people who understand our unique struggles can lessen the isolation we often feel. I found someone online who was going through similar challenges, and we began chatting regularly. That connection made me realize I wasn't alone in feeling hesitant to share my background. We also have to acknowledge those moments when we feel like we’re on the outside looking in. When friends are planning outings or talking about family backgrounds, it can stir up feelings of longing or sadness. In those times, it helps to remind ourselves that our experiences are valid, even if they’re not shared by everyone around us. Creating open dialogues with friends about the complexities of identity can lead to more understanding and empathy. Anyone else navigating friendships while keeping parts of your story close? Sometimes just finding one person who gets it can be a game changer. What’s worked for you in building connections?
