Many of us know how overwhelming it can feel when everyday situations trigger memories or emotions related to our experiences as survivors. It can be like a sudden wave crashing over us, leaving us gasping for air. We might find ourselves in a crowded space, hearing a certain song, or even just catching a scent that takes us back to a time we’d rather forget. It’s tough, and sometimes it feels like no one else truly gets that struggle.
One thing that really helps me is having a plan for those moments. I’ve started carrying a small note in my wallet with reminders of my safe spaces and grounding techniques. When I feel a trigger coming on, I’ll take a moment to breathe and read through my notes. It helps to remember that I have tools at my disposal. Some of us might find it useful to create a personal mantra or phrase that resonates with our healing journey. Saying it quietly to ourselves during tough moments can offer a sense of comfort and strength.
Another approach is to connect with someone who understands what we’re going through. I found someone nearby who also identifies as a survivor, and we started sharing our experiences. Just knowing that I have someone to talk to when triggers arise has made a huge difference. It’s comforting to have that connection, to know we’re not alone in this, and we can support each other through the tough times.
It’s also okay to set boundaries with certain situations or people. If you know a particular environment might trigger you, it’s perfectly valid to choose not to engage. Many of us have had to learn this the hard way, but it’s empowering to recognize our limits and prioritize our well-being.
Navigating triggers is definitely a journey, and it’s essential to find what works for you. Anyone else dealing with this? What have you found helps when those triggers come up? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it can make all the difference.
