Many of us know that feeling when we walk into a crowded room and suddenly, it’s like every sound, light, and movement is amplified. It can be overwhelming, and those moments can make us feel like we’re trapped in our own bodies. Navigating social situations with sensory overload is a challenge we know all too well, but I wanted to share some strategies that have helped me, and maybe they can help you too.
One thing that really helped me was preparing in advance. If I know I’m heading to a gathering, I try to visualize the environment. I think about where I’ll sit, how many people will be there, and what might trigger my sensitivities. Sometimes, I even bring a little comfort kit with items like noise-canceling headphones or a fidget toy. Having these tools can help ground us when things start to feel too intense.
Another approach many of us find useful is having a “safe word” or signal with a friend or family member. If you’re at an event and start to feel overwhelmed, letting them know you need a break can be a lifesaver. It’s helpful to have someone who understands and can help you step outside or find a quieter space to regroup. I found someone going through the same things, and we started checking in with each other regularly during events — that connection has made a huge difference in how I handle social situations.
Sometimes, taking a moment to breathe can be incredibly grounding too. If you feel the tension building, stepping away for just a few minutes to practice deep breathing can help reset your senses. Focusing on your breath and finding a quiet corner for a moment can make the world feel a little less chaotic.
It’s tough when the world feels too loud and bright, but connecting with even one person who experiences this can change everything. Anyone else dealing with sensory overload during social situations? I’d love to hear your strategies and what’s worked for you!
