How do you handle overwhelming sensations in public spaces without feeling judged?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling when we step into a public space and suddenly, it’s like the world turns up its volume and brightness to eleven. The chatter, the flickering lights, the overwhelming smells — it can be so intense that it feels like we’re about to burst. We might even start to feel a sense of panic creeping in. It’s completely valid to feel this way, and many of us are navigating these situations every day. One thing that really helps is having a sensory toolkit ready to go. This might include noise-canceling headphones or soft earplugs to help dull the noise. I’ve also found that carrying a small fidget toy or textured item in my pocket can be grounding when things get too intense. Sometimes, when I feel the wave of sensory overload coming, just holding something familiar can make a world of difference. Another approach some of us try is having an exit strategy. Before heading into a crowded place, we might scout out quieter corners or even map out where the nearest exit is. Knowing that there’s a way out can ease that anxious feeling. I once met someone who started going to events with a friend who understands their sensory processing differences. They agreed that if one of them felt overwhelmed, they would leave together. Just having that buddy system made them feel so much more comfortable. It’s also important to remember that we’re not alone in this. While it might feel like everyone is watching us when we step away or put on our headphones, many of us are experiencing similar struggles. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this can lighten the burden. I’ve found that reaching out to others who share these sensory experiences often leads to really meaningful conversations. Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it is what we need to feel validated. Anyone else dealing with this? What strategies have you found helpful when the world feels too overwhelming? I’d love to hear your experiences.
