The pressure to be the 'translator' for my family — how do you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling all too well: the pressure to be the 'translator' for our families. Whether it’s navigating conversations with doctors, dealing with school officials, or even just ordering food, it can feel like a heavy burden to carry. We love our families and want to support them, but sometimes it feels like we’re stuck in the middle, trying to bridge two worlds that don’t always understand each other. One thing that has helped me is setting boundaries. It’s important to remember that we’re not responsible for every interaction. If a situation feels too overwhelming, it’s okay to say, “I can’t handle this right now.” Many of us have found that taking a step back when we feel pressured allows us to recharge and approach things more calmly when we’re ready. I’ve also learned to communicate with my family about this pressure. I’ve started to share how I feel when they rely on me too much. Just having that conversation made a difference — they didn’t realize the toll it was taking on me. Another helpful approach is finding others in our community who understand these challenges. I connected with a few friends who are also second-generation immigrants, and we started a little support group. We share our experiences and swap tips on how to handle those tricky conversations. Just knowing that others are navigating the same pressures has been a huge relief. Sometimes, we even practice together — it feels less daunting when you’re not doing it alone. Also, we might find it helpful to embrace the moments when we can simply be kids or siblings rather than translators. It’s okay to step away from the role we’ve taken on and just enjoy time with family, even if it’s for a little while. This can help alleviate the constant pressure and remind us that we’re not just defined by our ability to translate. Anyone else feeling the weight of being the family translator? It can be tough, but sometimes just talking to one person who understands makes all the difference. What’s your experience?
