Many of us know how overwhelming it can be when a trigger unexpectedly brings back memories of our past traumas. It can feel like we’re right back in that moment, and just when we think we’ve moved forward, the past seems to pull us back. It’s a tough reality to face, especially when we’re just trying to go about our daily lives.
One thing that has helped me is creating a "safe space" at home. This is a small area where I can retreat when I feel triggered. I fill it with items that bring me comfort, like soft pillows, soothing scents, or even photos of people and places that make me feel secure. Having that physical space to go to has genuinely helped in grounding myself when those memories start flooding back.
Another strategy that many of us find useful is grounding techniques. When a trigger hits, we can focus on our surroundings to remind ourselves that we’re in the present. This could be as simple as naming five things we can see, four we can touch, three we can hear, two we can smell, and one we can taste. It sounds a bit cliché, but it really shifts our focus and helps us reconnect with the here and now.
Connecting with others who truly understand our experiences has also been invaluable. I found someone in my community who shares similar triggers, and we started checking in with each other regularly. Just knowing that I can talk to someone who gets it, without having to explain every detail, has made those hard moments a little easier to navigate.
The isolation can feel heavy at times, but reaching out to even one person who knows this journey can lighten the load. Have you found anything that helps you cope with triggers? Sometimes just sharing our experiences makes all the difference.
