How do you cope with the stigma that comes with being Reddy in social situations?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating social situations can feel like walking a tightrope, especially when we identify as Reddy. Many of us know that feeling of anxiety creeping in when we’re about to enter a gathering, worrying about how others might perceive us. It’s tough when the stigma surrounding our identity can make us feel isolated, even in a crowd. One thing that helps me is preparation. Before heading into a social event, I like to remind myself of my strengths and the unique perspective I bring to the table. It might be helpful to jot down a few positive affirmations or even engage in a little self-talk to boost our confidence. We all have moments of doubt, but remembering that our identity is just one part of who we are can help take the edge off. Another approach we can take is finding allies within our social circles. Having even one person who understands what it means to be Reddy can make a huge difference. I’ve found comfort in connecting with a friend who gets it—just knowing they’re there to support me has helped ease the pressure. We started meeting up before events to chat and share experiences, and that little bit of preparation together has turned out to be a game-changer for both of us. It’s also important to give ourselves permission to step back when we need to. If a social situation becomes overwhelming, it’s okay to take a breather. You might find a quiet corner to gather your thoughts or even step outside for some fresh air. It’s all about listening to ourselves and honoring our needs, even if it means removing ourselves from the spotlight for a moment. Anyone else feeling this struggle? Sometimes just chatting with someone who understands can lighten the load. I'd love to hear your experiences or what strategies you've found helpful!
