Many of us know that feeling of walking into a social situation, heart racing, and wondering if we’ll measure up. The pressure to constantly prove our worth can be overwhelming, especially when we’re navigating spaces that don’t always understand our experiences. Whether it's dealing with anxiety, neurodiversity, or the complexities of our identities, it can feel like we're always on stage, performing for an audience that may not even see the real us.
One thing that’s helped me is shifting my focus from trying to impress others to simply being present. When I stop worrying about how I’m perceived, I can engage more authentically. I’ve found that when I approach conversations with curiosity instead of self-doubt, it opens up a whole new world of connections. Sharing our stories, even the messy parts, often resonates with others who feel the same way. You might find that opening up about your challenges invites someone else to do the same, creating a space where we can both feel valued for who we are, not just what we can contribute.
Another approach that’s worked for many of us is setting boundaries around our social engagements. It’s okay to say no or to leave early if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Protecting our energy can make a huge difference in how we show up in these situations. I’ve been vocal about needing a break when things get too intense, and interestingly, it’s often those same people who appreciate honesty and might even admit they feel the same pressure. Finding even one person who understands this struggle can ease the burden tremendously.
Lastly, practicing self-compassion is key. Remembering that we all have unique journeys and challenges can help us be kinder to ourselves. Instead of comparing our worth to others, we can remind ourselves of our own strengths and values. I’ve started keeping a list of things I like about myself, and when I feel that familiar pressure creeping in, I look back at it. It’s a little reminder that I am enough just as I am.
Anyone else feeling this pressure in social situations? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear what strategies you’ve tried!
