Navigating the expectations from extended family as a Punjabi Khatri can often feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have faced those moments when family gatherings turn into unspoken contests of who’s achieved what, or when questions about marriage and career choices come with a weight that feels hard to bear. It’s like there’s this unwritten rulebook that we’re all supposed to follow, but the truth is, not everyone’s journey aligns with that.
One thing that has really helped me is finding a few friends who understand these pressures. Having even one person to vent to about the expectations we face can make a huge difference. I remember chatting with a friend about how our families expect us to take on certain professions or marry within specific circles, and just being able to share those experiences lifted a lot of the weight. We started meeting regularly to talk through our feelings, and it’s been comforting to know I’m not alone in this.
Another approach some of us try is setting clear personal boundaries. This can be tough with family, especially when it feels like you’re going against tradition. But I’ve found that having honest conversations about what you want for your life can open doors. You might find that your family, while initially resistant, can come around when they see how passionate you are about your own choices.
It’s also important to remind ourselves that it’s okay to take our time. Many of us feel the pressure to conform to timelines that don’t fit our reality. Whether it’s about career milestones or marriage, it’s okay to carve out our own paths. I’ve learned that sharing my own timeline with my family — letting them know what I’m working towards, even if it’s different from their expectations — has helped ease some of that pressure.
Anyone else feeling this push-and-pull with family expectations? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can change everything. I’d love to hear how you navigate these conversations and what strategies have worked for you!
