Navigating the expectations of family when it comes to marriage — does anyone else feel the pressure?

Navigating family expectations around marriage can feel like walking a tightrope, especially for many of us in the Punjabi Khatri community. The pressure can be overwhelming, and it often feels like everyone has an opinion on when we should get married, who we should marry, and how the whole process should unfold.
Many of us have experienced that familiar question from family gatherings: “So, when are you settling down?” It can feel like a constant reminder that our worth is somehow tied to our relationship status. One thing that really helped me was opening up to a cousin who was feeling the same way. We started sharing our thoughts and frustrations about the pressure, and just knowing someone else understands made the burden feel lighter.
Another approach some of us try is to set boundaries with family. It’s not easy, but clearly communicating our feelings can reduce the pressure. Maybe it’s as simple as saying, “I appreciate your concern, but I want to focus on my career for now.” This can be tough, especially when we consider how family is deeply intertwined with our cultural identity, but it’s important to prioritize our own timelines.
We might also find comfort in connecting with friends or peers who share our background and understand these expectations. Having those conversations can remind us that we are not alone in this journey. Whether it’s sharing stories over chai or venting about family pressure, these connections can be grounding and help us feel more empowered in our choices.
Anyone else feeling this kind of pressure from family? It helps to share our experiences and find support among those who truly get it. What have you found helpful in navigating these conversations?
