Navigating social gatherings can feel like walking a tightrope for many of us dealing with PTSD. The anticipation of being in a crowd, the noise, and the unpredictability can stir up all sorts of feelings we’d rather avoid. At times, it can feel isolating when others seem to enjoy the atmosphere while we’re battling our own internal storms.
One thing that has helped me is preparing ahead of time. Before heading out, I try to think of a few grounding techniques that I can use if things start to feel overwhelming. This could be something as simple as focusing on my breath or carrying a small item in my pocket, like a smooth stone or a stress ball, to help anchor me in the moment. When I feel the anxiety creeping in, having that little tool can make a world of difference.
Setting boundaries is another essential part of managing these situations. It’s okay to excuse ourselves if we need a break. If I’m at a gathering and it starts to feel too much, I’ll step outside for a quick breath of fresh air or find a quiet corner to collect my thoughts. Many of us find that just letting someone know we might need some space helps ease the pressure, and it’s comforting to have a friend who understands what we’re going through. I found someone who gets it, and we’ve started checking in with each other during events — it’s been a game changer.
Another approach we can try is having a support buddy if we’re comfortable with that. Just being able to look over and see a familiar face who understands can create a sense of safety in what might otherwise feel like a chaotic setting. This connection has been vital for me, especially when the crowd feels overwhelming.
It’s also important to remember that it’s okay to not be okay. Some gatherings may be tougher than others, and that’s totally valid. Allowing ourselves grace in those moments can help shift the focus from what we “should” be feeling to what we actually are feeling.
Anyone else feeling the weight of social gatherings lately? How do you manage those triggering moments? Sharing our experiences can really help lighten the load.
