We all know that feeling when a trigger sneaks up on us, catching us completely off guard. It could be a sound, a smell, or even a place that sends us spiraling back to a time we’d rather forget. Many of us have experienced that sudden rush of anxiety or panic in what seems like a perfectly normal situation, and it can feel incredibly isolating.
One thing that helps is having a plan in place for when those unexpected moments arise. For instance, I keep a small grounding toolkit with me. It includes things like my favorite essential oil for calming, a stress ball, or even a few affirmations written on cards. When I feel a trigger creeping in, I can take a moment to breathe and focus on something tangible in my hands. This simple act of grounding can really pull me back to the present, even if just for a moment.
Another approach many of us find useful is practicing mindfulness techniques. It might sound a bit cliché, but paying attention to our senses can be grounding. You might try to focus on five things you can see around you, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. When I remember to do this, it shifts my attention away from the overwhelming feelings and helps me regain control.
Connecting with others who understand our experiences can be a lifeline too. I found a friend who shares similar triggers, and we check in with each other regularly. Just knowing that someone else gets it can be a huge relief. Whether it’s texting each other when we’re feeling triggered or meeting up for a walk, that support makes those tough moments feel a little less daunting.
So, how do you cope when triggers catch you off guard? Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to someone who truly understands can make all the difference. Would love to hear what’s worked for you!
