Dealing with assumptions from others and how it affects my self-esteem

Have you ever felt the weight of assumptions that others place on you, and how it can chip away at your self-esteem? Many of us in this community know how frustrating it can be to navigate a world that often jumps to conclusions about our lives, identities, or abilities. It’s like carrying an invisible backpack filled with expectations that don’t belong to us.
One thing that really helped me was learning to confront those assumptions head-on. Instead of letting them linger and affect how I see myself, I started finding ways to express my truth. Whether it’s sharing my story in small groups or just chatting with someone who gets it, speaking up became a form of empowerment. It feels good to remind ourselves and others that our journeys are uniquely ours, and we’re not defined by their perceptions.
Another approach some of us try is to create a “self-affirmation toolkit.” This can be a collection of quotes, personal mantras, or even a playlist that lifts you up on tough days. When those negative assumptions bubble up, we can reach for our toolkit to reaffirm our worth and drown out the noise. It’s amazing how a song or a few kind words can shift our mindset and help us reclaim our self-esteem.
Building connections with others who understand what we’re going through can also make a world of difference. I found someone nearby who deals with similar challenges, and we started talking regularly. Having just one person who truly gets the struggle of dealing with assumptions has been a game changer. We support each other and remind one another of our strengths when those doubts creep in.
Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear what strategies you’ve found helpful and how you navigate the assumptions that come our way. Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything.
