Navigating dating apps as a pansexual person — what challenges have you faced?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Dating apps can be a mixed bag for many of us, but as pansexual individuals, we often face unique challenges that can make the experience even more complicated. For starters, navigating the assumptions that people make about our identity can be tough. Many folks still think of pansexuality as just a phase or something that’s less valid than other orientations, which can lead to awkward conversations or outright rejection before we even get to know someone. One thing that really helps is being clear in our profiles about who we are and what we’re looking for. We might want to mention our pansexuality right away to attract like-minded people, but it can be a tightrope walk. You might find that some potential matches are supportive, while others might not get it at all. Sharing our experiences with those who truly understand can lighten the load; I found a group of friends who also identify as pansexual, and being able to talk about our dating app experiences has been a game changer. Just knowing we’re not alone in this can make it a little less daunting. Another challenge many of us face is the prevalence of bi-erasure. Sometimes people assume that if we're pan, we must also be bisexual, or they can misunderstand what pansexuality means altogether. It can be exhausting to educate others while trying to make a real connection. I’ve found that having even one person in my life who truly understands these nuances helps—whether it’s a friend, a match who gets it, or even someone I met through a community platform like this one. Those conversations can be comforting and validating. Lastly, let’s not forget the pressure of finding the right language to express our identity. It can be tricky to navigate conversations about attraction when we’re often met with binary perspectives. We might feel like we have to explain ourselves more than others do. Finding safe spaces to share these feelings and experiences is crucial. Anyone else navigating dating apps as a pansexual person? What challenges have you faced? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference. Would love to hear your stories!
