Many of us know the weight that comes with being labeled as "Other ST." It can feel like we’re constantly navigating a world that doesn’t quite understand us, and that can be really isolating. It’s not just about the label itself; it’s about the assumptions and stigma that often accompany it.
One thing that has helped me cope is redefining what "Other" means to me. Instead of viewing it as something negative, I’ve started embracing it as a unique part of my identity. This shift in perspective has made it easier to share my experiences with others. When I talk about what being "Other ST" means to me, I often find that it resonates with people, even if they aren't part of the same community. Sharing those stories can create unexpected connections, and having even one person who truly gets this can be a game changer.
Another approach I’ve found useful is surrounding myself with a supportive circle. Many of us face misunderstandings from friends or family who might not see the nuances of our experiences. It can be incredibly helpful to seek out others who share this identity. I found a small group of people nearby who have similar experiences, and we meet regularly to talk about the challenges we face. Just knowing we’re not alone in dealing with the stigma makes those tough days a little brighter.
It’s also important to practice self-compassion. We all have those moments when the stigma feels overwhelming. On those days, I remind myself that my identity is valid, and it doesn’t need to fit into anyone else's box. Journaling about my feelings or even speaking them out loud can help me process and release some of that weight.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear what has helped you cope with the stigma.
