Feeling misunderstood by friends and family — does anyone else experience this?

Do you ever feel like the people closest to you just don’t get it? Many of us in this community know that feeling all too well. Whether it’s our neurodivergent brains, our mental health struggles, or other invisible identities, it can be really hard when friends and family don’t understand what we’re going through. It’s like trying to explain color to someone who’s never seen it.
One thing that has helped me is finding a way to express my feelings to those I care about. Instead of expecting them to understand everything right away, I’ve started sharing specific examples of what my experience is like. For instance, telling a friend how overwhelming it is when sounds become too loud or when I need to stick to a routine can help them grasp my reality a bit better. Sometimes, just having that one conversation can open a door to deeper understanding.
Another approach I’ve found beneficial is connecting with others who share similar experiences. Finding a couple of people who also feel misunderstood has been a game-changer for me. We started chatting regularly, and just knowing I'm not alone in this has made all the difference. It’s a relief to share our stories, and I’ve found that we can support each other in ways that friends and family might not be able to.
Of course, it’s not always easy. There are days when the isolation feels heavier, and I wish my loved ones would just “get it” without me having to explain. But I remind myself that it’s okay to set boundaries when I need space to recharge or when I’m feeling overwhelmed by social interactions.
Anyone else navigating these tough conversations with friends and family? It would be great to hear what’s worked for you or how you cope when you feel misunderstood. Sometimes, just talking to someone who gets it changes everything.
