How do you navigate social situations where others expect you to "be over it" by now?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling when we walk into a social situation and we can sense the unspoken expectation: “You should be over it by now.” It can be exhausting and honestly, pretty isolating. It’s like everyone else is moving on while we’re still navigating our own journey, one that’s often not visible on the outside. One thing that has really helped me is practicing self-advocacy. When someone asks how I'm doing, I try to be honest about my feelings, even if it's uncomfortable. Saying something like, “I’m still working through some things” can shift the conversation and help others understand where I’m at. It also opens up the door for deeper connections, especially when I’ve found someone else in the room who’s going through something similar. Just knowing you're not alone in this can be a huge relief. Another approach we can consider is finding small, supportive groups or even just one person to lean on. Sometimes, it’s not about changing everyone’s perspective but surrounding ourselves with those who get it. I’ve found that having even one person in my life who truly understands this struggle makes social situations feel less daunting. We’ve started meeting up regularly, which really helps to remind me that I’m not on this journey alone. And let’s not forget to give ourselves grace. Recovery isn’t linear, and it’s okay to have setbacks. When we’re in a social setting, it’s easy to feel pressured to act a certain way, but if we can allow ourselves to feel what we’re feeling, we might just find that we connect with others on a more genuine level. Anyone else feel this pressure when you’re out with friends or family? Sometimes just talking to one person who understands changes everything — what’s been your experience in these situations?
