How do you navigate friendships with people who can’t quite understand your identity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating friendships when you feel like your identity isn’t fully understood can be really challenging. Many of us in the LGBTQ+ community have experienced those moments when we’re with friends who just don’t get what it’s like to live our truth. It can lead to feelings of isolation or frustration, especially when we want to share our experiences and be seen for who we truly are. One thing that’s helped me is finding ways to gently educate my friends about my experience. For instance, I’ve shared articles or personal stories that resonate with me, which can open up a dialogue. It’s like giving them a little window into my world without forcing them to feel overwhelmed. You might find that they appreciate the chance to learn, even if it takes time for them to fully grasp it. Another approach some of us try is to seek out friendships with others who share our identity. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this can be so comforting. I found someone in my local community who is navigating similar feelings, and we started meeting regularly. Just knowing that I have someone who truly gets it has made all the difference on tougher days. It’s also important to recognize that not every friendship will thrive in the same way. Some friends may never fully understand, and that’s okay. Setting boundaries around certain topics can help preserve those relationships while protecting your energy. It’s about finding a balance that feels safe for you, so you can be your authentic self without feeling the need to constantly explain or justify your identity. Navigating friendships in the LGBTQ+ community is definitely a journey. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. What’s been your experience in finding that understanding?
