Has anyone else felt misunderstood by educators who don't recognize your learning differences?

Have you ever sat in a classroom, feeling completely lost, while everyone else seemed to get it? Many of us have been there, caught in that frustrating cycle of trying to explain our learning differences to educators who just don’t seem to understand. It can feel isolating, especially when we know our brains work a little differently, but that difference often goes unnoticed or misunderstood.
One thing that helped me was finding ways to articulate my needs. I started writing down specific examples of what I struggle with and how I learn best. When I finally shared this with my teachers, it felt like a weight lifted. Some of them were genuinely surprised and willing to adapt their approaches. It’s so important to advocate for ourselves, even when it feels daunting.
Another approach that really made a difference was connecting with classmates who also have learning differences. We formed a small study group, and it was amazing to see how we could support each other. Just knowing that there were others who understood my challenges made tackling assignments feel less overwhelming. Sometimes, even just talking about our experiences helped clarify things for all of us.
We know that not every educator is going to get it right. There’s often a steep learning curve for them in recognizing and accommodating our needs. But having even one person in your corner—whether it’s a fellow student or a more understanding teacher—can change everything. It’s about building that support network, even if it starts small.
How about you? Anyone else feeling misunderstood by educators? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you navigate these challenges.
