Navigating family gatherings when you know they don’t understand your identity

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be a mixed bag, especially when we know our relatives might not understand our experiences as part of the Other Korean caste identity. Many of us have faced that awkward moment when someone mentions our background in a way that feels dismissive or even hurtful. It can be exhausting to navigate conversations that seem to ignore our complexities or the struggles we face. One thing that has helped me is preparing myself for these gatherings with a few go-to responses. When someone asks about my identity or makes assumptions, I’ve found that having a simple but clear way to express my perspective can really change the dynamic. For example, I might say, “I appreciate your interest, but my experience is a bit different than what you might think.” This not only sets the stage for a more honest conversation but also gives me a sense of control over how I’m represented. Another approach that some of us have tried is finding common ground with family members. Instead of diving straight into identity topics, I’ve found it helpful to start with shared experiences or interests. Maybe we can bond over food or a favorite family memory before delving into tougher discussions. It’s a way to create a more comfortable space for dialogue about our identity that feels less confrontational. Connecting with even one family member who understands can make a huge difference. I started talking to a cousin who is also part of the Other Korean community, and we often strategize together about how to handle family events. Having someone to share those experiences with makes the hard days feel a little lighter. Navigating these gatherings isn't easy, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear your stories and what has worked for you in these situations.
