Navigating relationships with family members who just don’t get our experiences can be one of the toughest parts of living with an invisible identity, especially for those of us who are justice-involved. Many of us know that feeling when we try to explain what we’re going through, and it’s met with confusion or even judgment. It can leave us feeling more isolated, especially when we really want understanding and support from our loved ones.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to communicate that reflect my experiences without overwhelming my family. I’ve started using simple analogies or stories that relate to their experiences instead of trying to explain the complexities of my own. For example, when I talk about the anxiety that comes with my mental health struggles, I compare it to the way they might feel stressed before a big family event. It’s not a perfect solution, but it opens the door for them to relate without feeling defensive.
Another approach some of us have found beneficial is sharing articles or resources that resonate with our experiences. Instead of having to be the one to explain everything firsthand, I’ve sent family members links to pieces that articulate the challenges we face in a way that feels more neutral. This way, they can read and reflect on it in their own time, which sometimes leads to more meaningful conversations later on. I also found that having even one person in my life who understands the unique nuances of being justice-involved has made a world of difference—just knowing there’s someone out there who gets it eases that isolation.
It’s not always easy, and we face the risk of being misunderstood or dismissed. Sometimes, it feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle just to be seen and heard. But I believe that every small step towards connection counts. Anyone else dealing with this with family? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you or any challenges you’re facing. Your experiences matter and sharing them could help someone else feel less alone.
