Navigating friendships after justice involvement — how do you rebuild trust?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating friendships after justice involvement can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that feeling of wanting to reconnect with old friends or build new relationships, but we’re often burdened by the weight of past experiences and the fear of judgment. It can be tough to rebuild trust when so much has happened, but we’re not alone in this journey. One thing that really helped me was being honest about my experiences. When I started talking to friends I had lost touch with, I found that sharing my story opened up conversations. It wasn’t always easy—some friends needed time to process what I shared—but being vulnerable often helped bridge the gap. You might find that some people appreciate your honesty and become more understanding. Others may not be ready to accept your journey, and that’s okay too; it’s all part of finding who truly gets you. Another approach many of us try is starting fresh with new connections. Sometimes it feels safer to reach out to people who understand the unique challenges of justice involvement. Online platforms and community spaces can be great for this. I found someone in a similar situation, and we began meeting regularly. Having just one person who gets it made those hard days feel a little lighter. It’s comforting to know that we’re not alone in our experiences and that we can support each other as we navigate this tricky path. We also have to be patient with ourselves and others. Rebuilding trust takes time, and it’s normal to feel a mix of hope and fear as we work on our friendships. Some days might feel more challenging than others, and that’s okay. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. Anyone else navigating friendships after justice involvement? Sometimes, just sharing our experiences with each other can make a world of difference.
