How do you navigate conversations about your past when meeting new people?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Meeting new people can feel like walking a tightrope for many of us who have pasts intertwined with justice involvement. We often wonder how much to share and when. It’s a balancing act between wanting to be open and fearing judgment or misunderstanding. One thing that helps me is thinking about the context of the conversation. If it feels right, I might share a little about my past early on, but I try to keep it focused on how it shaped who I am today rather than just the details of what happened. For example, I might say, “I’ve had some challenges in my past, but I’ve learned a lot from them and they’ve pushed me to become more resilient.” This opens the door for deeper discussions without diving too deep too fast. Another approach we've found useful is finding common ground. Many of us share experiences that can build a bridge with new people. If someone mentions a struggle or a passion that resonates with us, we can connect it back to our journey. For instance, if we both love community service, I might say, “I found it really healing to give back after everything I went through.” This shifts the focus from the past to our growth and current interests. It’s also important to gauge the other person’s reactions. If someone seems uncomfortable or uninterested, it’s okay to pivot the conversation. Many of us know the feeling of being met with blank stares or awkward silences, and it’s tough. Trust me, you’re not alone in this. But when we find someone who really listens, who gets it, it can be a game changer. I found someone who shares a similar background, and we’ve started meeting regularly. Just having that connection has made navigating these conversations feel less daunting. Anyone else grappling with how to share your story? I’d love to hear what strategies have worked for you in connecting with new people. Sometimes just a single conversation with someone who understands can make all the difference.
