Have you ever felt invisible or overlooked in discussions about Igbo identity? How do you cope with that feeling?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever felt like your Igbo identity isn't fully recognized in discussions, like you're part of the conversation but somehow on the sidelines? Many of us have experienced that feeling of invisibility, especially when it seems like only certain narratives or experiences are highlighted. It can be frustrating and isolating, but I’ve found a few ways to navigate those feelings that might resonate with you. One thing that helps is actively seeking out spaces where our unique experiences are valued. I started participating in smaller, local gatherings or online forums focused specifically on Igbo identity, where we can share our stories without the noise of broader discussions. Being in a space with others who know what it’s like to feel overlooked has been a game changer. Sometimes, just hearing someone else articulate the same feelings makes you feel seen and understood. Another approach is to embrace storytelling. Many of us have rich narratives that deserve to be shared and celebrated. I’ve started writing down my own experiences and sharing them with friends or in community groups. It’s empowering to put our stories out there and see the impact they have on others. Plus, when we share, it often encourages others to open up about their own journeys, fostering a sense of connection that we all crave. Connecting with someone who gets what we’re going through can really ease that sense of invisibility. I found a fellow Igbo person who shares similar feelings, and we started meeting up regularly. Just having those conversations has made me feel more grounded in my identity. It’s like we lifted each other up, reminding ourselves that our experiences matter. Anyone else feeling this way about Igbo identity? How do you cope with those moments when you feel overlooked? Sharing our experiences can really help shine a light on our unique journeys.
