Has anyone faced discrimination in social settings due to their caste identity? How did you cope with that experience?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have faced moments in social settings where our caste identity has felt like a heavy weight, making it hard to connect or even feel accepted. It can be disheartening when you notice the whispers or the way people glance your way, and you can sense the judgment in the air. It’s a unique struggle that can leave us feeling isolated, even in a crowd. One thing that helped me was finding a small group of friends who share similar experiences. We started meeting regularly to talk about what we face and how it affects us socially. Just having that safe space to share our stories made a huge difference. It reminded us that we’re not alone and that our feelings are valid. Sometimes, just knowing that others understand our journey can ease some of the weight we carry. Another approach some of us try is to actively educate those around us about our caste identity. While it can be exhausting to constantly explain ourselves, little conversations here and there can slowly change perceptions. I remember speaking up at a gathering when someone made a dismissive comment. It wasn’t easy, but I found that standing up for myself not only empowered me but also sparked discussions among others. We might also find solace in cultural practices that celebrate our identity. Whether it’s through music, dance, or storytelling, embracing our roots can be a beautiful way to cope with the discrimination we face. I’ve participated in community events that honor our heritage, and it’s been uplifting to see others take pride in who we are. Anyone else dealing with this in social settings? It can feel heavy, but sometimes just one conversation with someone who gets it can change everything. What has helped you cope?
