How do you navigate the fear of rejection when dating someone new?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Dating can feel like a minefield for many of us, but when you’re living with HIV, the fear of rejection can hit differently. The vulnerability that comes with sharing our status can be overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to worry about how someone might react. We all know that anxious feeling before a date, wondering if this is the moment we’ll have to disclose our status and how it might change everything. One thing that helped me was being upfront about my HIV status earlier rather than waiting until things got serious. I found that when I shared my story from the beginning, it set a more honest tone for the relationship. Sure, it felt scary, but many of us have found that people who are truly interested and compassionate will appreciate our honesty. Those initial conversations can also help filter out those who might not be the right fit for us. Another approach some of us try is connecting with others in the community before diving into dating. Many of us have found support groups or online spaces where we can share experiences and even get dating tips from people who understand what we’re going through. Building a friendship with someone who gets it can ease that fear of rejection when we eventually decide to date. Having even one person to talk to about our worries can make a huge difference. And let’s be real—rejection can still hurt, no matter what. It’s okay to feel upset if someone doesn’t respond positively. Many of us remind ourselves that their reaction is more about them than us. Finding someone who sees our worth, status included, is a journey, but one worth taking. Anyone else navigating these feelings? It would be great to hear what’s worked for you or any tips you’ve picked up along the way. Sometimes just sharing our stories can make the path feel a little less lonely.
