How do you navigate conversations about your identity with new friends?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Starting new friendships can be a bit of a minefield, especially when it comes to conversations about our identities. Many of us know that feeling of wanting to share who we really are but also worrying about how it might change the dynamic. It's like standing at the edge of a cliff, unsure of how deep the water is below. One thing that has helped me is to gauge the other person's openness before diving in. Sometimes, starting with lighter topics can ease us into the conversation. You might share a funny story related to your identity or mention a recent experience that connects to it. This gives them a chance to respond and shows you how they might react to deeper topics later on. Another approach some of us try is to be honest about our hesitation. It’s okay to say something like, “I really value honesty in friendships, and I want to share a part of me that’s important.” This can open the door for a more authentic discussion and helps the other person understand that this isn’t just a casual topic for you — it’s a big part of who you are. One of the hardest parts can be the fear of rejection or misunderstanding. We’ve all had those moments where we felt judged or dismissed. Finding someone nearby who understands this journey can make a world of difference. I found a friend who shares a similar experience, and we talk about these conversations regularly. Just having that support has made me feel less alone and more confident when opening up to new people. Ultimately, it’s about finding that balance between being true to ourselves and being mindful of who we’re talking to. It might take time, and that’s okay. Anyone else navigating these tricky conversations? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
