Navigating family gatherings when you feel like an outsider

Family gatherings can feel like a double-edged sword for many of us who identify as outsiders in our own families. We love the warmth that comes from seeing familiar faces, but often it’s tinged with that feeling of being an outsider looking in. It can be overwhelming, right?
One thing that helps is setting boundaries ahead of time. We can decide what topics we're comfortable discussing and which ones to steer clear of. This way, if someone brings up a subject that makes us feel anxious or excluded, we can gently redirect the conversation. For example, if someone starts talking about their recent vacation and you know it’s going to lead to comparisons, you might say something like, “That sounds amazing! I’ve been diving into some new hobbies lately—have you tried anything new?” It gives us a chance to share a part of ourselves that feels genuine, even if it’s not the typical family small talk.
Another approach that some of us find helpful is to bring a plus one. Having someone who gets you by your side can make a world of difference. Whether it’s a friend or someone from our community, having that support can help ease the tension and provide a sense of belonging, even in a room where we might feel like an outsider. We can share knowing glances or even a laugh when things get a bit too overwhelming.
It's also okay to take breaks during these gatherings. If you find yourself feeling anxious or out of place, step outside for a breath of fresh air or find a quiet room where you can recharge. Many of us know that sometimes just a few minutes alone can help us feel more grounded and ready to face the crowd again.
Ultimately, the most important part is to remember that our experiences are valid. If you feel like an outsider, it’s not just you. Connecting with even one person who understands this feeling can change everything. Anyone else navigating these family dynamics? What strategies have worked for you? I’d love to hear your stories.
