How do you navigate friendships when people don't understand the stigma attached to being Osu?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating friendships as part of the Osu diaspora can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have experienced that awkward moment when we mention our identity and watch our friends' faces shift, whether it's from confusion or discomfort. It's tough to be in a space where our heritage carries a stigma that others don’t fully grasp. One thing that has helped me is finding friends who are either part of the Osu community or who are open-minded and genuinely willing to learn. Sharing our stories can be a powerful way to break down barriers. I remember opening up to a friend about the stigma I face, and instead of backing away, they leaned in. They asked questions and really tried to understand. That conversation didn’t just strengthen our bond; it also gave me a safe space to express my feelings and experiences. Another approach is to set boundaries with those who just don’t get it. It’s okay to step back from friendships that trigger those feelings of misunderstanding or judgment. Protecting our mental space is crucial, especially when we’re trying to navigate our identity. Focusing on relationships that uplift us can make a world of difference. When we surround ourselves with people who respect our journey, it helps combat the isolation that often comes with stigma. Lastly, I’ve found that connecting with others who share this experience is incredibly comforting. Just knowing that there are others out there who understand the unique struggles of being Osu has been a game-changer for me. One thing that really helped was finding a local group of Osu individuals who meet up regularly. Sharing our stories, celebrating our heritage, and just being ourselves in a supportive environment has made the hard days easier. Has anyone else felt the weight of these friendships? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything — what’s your experience been like?
