Have you experienced discrimination in your workplace because of your Oraon identity? How do you cope with it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating the workplace can be challenging for many of us, especially when our Oraon identity is met with misunderstanding or discrimination. It’s tough to feel like we have to constantly prove our worth when our cultural background is often seen as a barrier instead of a strength. Many of us have felt that heavy weight of being overlooked or marginalized, and it can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration. One thing that has helped me cope is finding small pockets of connection with colleagues who appreciate my culture. Even if they don’t share my background, having conversations where I can share my experiences and culture has been uplifting. It not only helps build a sense of community but also opens the door to educating others. Sometimes, just having one colleague who genuinely listens can shift the workplace dynamics a bit, making it feel less lonely. Another approach we can try is to document our experiences. Keeping a journal of instances where we face discrimination can be therapeutic. It helps us process our feelings and can also be a useful tool if we decide to raise these issues with HR or management. Knowing that our experiences are valid and not just in our heads can be empowering. We might also consider seeking out allies within our workplace. Often, there are people who care about inclusion and diversity but might not know how to approach the topic. Finding individuals who are willing to stand with us can make a world of difference. I found someone who shared similar experiences, and we started discussing our challenges regularly — it really helped to know I wasn't alone in this. Anyone else facing these issues at work? Sometimes just sharing our stories with someone who understands can lighten the load. What has worked for you in these situations?
