How do you cope with the stigma attached to your occupation when interacting with others in social settings?

Navigating social interactions can be tricky when our occupations carry stigma, especially for many of us within the Occupational caste in Ethiopia. Whether it’s feeling judged based on our work or facing assumptions about our worth, these experiences can weigh heavily on our shoulders. Many of us know that feeling of wanting to share who we are but hesitating because of how others might react.
One thing that has helped me is finding spaces where I can connect with others who understand this struggle. Just sharing a meal or coffee with someone in the same boat can feel like a breath of fresh air. We’ve shared our stories, laughed, and sometimes cried about the unfairness we face. That connection reminds us we’re not alone in this journey, and it can give us the strength to face social settings with a bit more confidence.
Another approach some of us try is reframing our conversations. Instead of leading with our occupation, we might share our passions or interests first. This way, we can connect on a personal level before getting into the more complicated parts of our identity. It’s a small shift, but it can sometimes change the whole tone of the interaction. You might find that people are more interested in you as a person than the label attached to your work.
It’s also okay to set boundaries in conversations. If someone makes a judgmental comment or tries to pigeonhole you based on your occupation, it’s perfectly fine to steer the conversation elsewhere or express how that makes you feel. Many of us are learning that asserting our worth is a powerful act, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.
Anyone else dealing with this? It’s so tough to navigate, but sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear how you cope!
