How do you navigate cultural expectations around success when you feel like an outsider?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of being caught between two worlds when it comes to cultural expectations around success. We’re often raised with specific values and aspirations that can feel so heavy, especially when they don’t align with our personal dreams or identities. It can leave us feeling like outsiders in our own communities, grappling with the weight of expectations while trying to carve out our own paths. One thing that helped me was starting to embrace the idea that success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. In our community, many of us come from backgrounds where traditional markers of success—like a stable job, marriage, or owning a home—are prioritized. But what if we redefine success to include personal fulfillment, happiness, or even just being true to ourselves? I began to reflect on what success means to me, rather than what it’s supposed to mean. It was liberating to realize that pursuing passions, even if they seem unconventional, is valid too. Another approach that some of us try is finding others who share our experiences. It’s amazing how much lighter the burden feels when we connect with people who understand the cultural nuances we face. I found someone in my area who feels similarly disconnected from traditional expectations, and we’ve started meeting up to share our thoughts and struggles. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this can make a world of difference. Navigating these expectations can be tough, especially when family and cultural pressures loom large. Many of us might feel guilt or shame for not following the “expected” path, but it’s important to remember that we’re not alone. Sharing our experiences with each other can help us find clarity and support. If you’re feeling the weight of these cultural expectations, consider opening up to someone in our community. Anyone else feeling this tension? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference—what’s your experience with navigating cultural expectations around success?
