The subtle ways racism affects my day-to-day interactions

Many of us have experienced those subtle moments in our day-to-day lives where racism rears its head in ways that can be hard to pinpoint but feel deeply impactful. It might not always be the overt acts that stand out, but rather the microaggressions that chip away at our sense of belonging and self-worth.
One thing that really gets to me is when people assume my abilities based on stereotypes. For instance, when I walk into a room and get asked if I’m in charge of the catering instead of being seen as a potential leader. It’s those little assumptions that can feel exhausting to navigate, and many of us might find ourselves having to prove ourselves twice as hard just to earn the same respect as others.
Another experience that hits home is the way people sometimes respond to our expressions of frustration or sadness. When we share our feelings about experiences of racism, it can feel like we’re met with disbelief or even defensiveness. This can be isolating. But one thing I found helpful is seeking out spaces where people truly understand these feelings. I connected with someone from a similar background, and just having those conversations has lifted a weight off my shoulders. Knowing we can share our experiences without judgment makes it a little easier to face the world outside.
We might also notice how certain environments can feel unwelcoming. Whether it’s being the only person of color in a meeting or receiving side-eyes in a store, these experiences can create a sense of hyper-awareness that’s hard to shake. Finding communities where we can express our frustrations and share coping strategies has been a lifeline for many of us. It’s comforting to realize we aren’t alone in this.
Anyone else dealing with these subtle but significant interactions? Sometimes just talking about our daily experiences with someone who gets it changes everything.
