Many of us know the weight that comes with being a migrant worker, especially when it involves providing for family back home. The pressure can feel overwhelming at times. Balancing our own needs while trying to support loved ones from afar is no easy task. Sometimes, it feels like we’re carrying the whole world on our shoulders.
One thing that helps is setting realistic expectations for ourselves and for our families. We might want to send money every month, but it’s okay to have months where we can’t. It’s important to communicate openly about our financial situation with our loved ones. Sharing the reality of our expenses here can help them understand that while we want to provide, we also need to take care of ourselves.
Another strategy some of us have found useful is creating a support network here. Having even one person who understands what it’s like to be in this position can make a huge difference. I connected with a fellow migrant worker, and we began sharing tips on budgeting and managing our emotional health. Sometimes, just talking about the pressure we face can lighten the load.
Taking time for self-care is essential, even if it feels selfish at times. This could be as simple as taking a walk, listening to music, or cooking a favorite meal. When we're feeling more balanced, we can be in a better place to support our families back home without losing ourselves in the process.
Anyone else dealing with this pressure? How do you find ways to manage your own needs while supporting family back home? Would love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you through.
