How do you navigate cultural expectations around marriage and family as a Meghwal?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations around marriage and family as a Meghwal can feel overwhelming at times. Many of us have grown up with traditions and values deeply rooted in our community, and while there’s a lot of beauty in that, it can also create pressure to conform to certain paths that don’t always align with who we are or what we want. One thing that really helped me was talking openly with family members about my feelings and aspirations. I realized that many of us share similar struggles, whether it's the pressure to marry by a certain age or the expectation to follow traditional roles. By having these conversations, I found that some family members were more understanding than I anticipated. It’s such a relief to know that we’re not alone in feeling this way. Another approach some of us try is seeking out friendships with fellow Meghwals who are navigating the same cultural landscape. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this journey can make a world of difference. I found someone who was also feeling the weight of cultural expectations, and we started meeting regularly. Those conversations have helped me feel less isolated and more empowered to define my own path. Sometimes, we might feel torn between honoring our cultural heritage and pursuing our own desires. It’s okay to seek a balance that feels right for you. Many of us have found that setting small boundaries can help. For instance, if your family expects you to settle down right away, it’s perfectly valid to express your need for personal growth and exploration before making such big decisions. Anyone else dealing with this? It’s comforting to share our experiences and strategies — sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. What has your journey been like?
