How do you navigate cultural expectations while living in a predominantly different society?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations as part of the Mandaean community while living in a predominantly different society can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us experience that tension between wanting to honor our traditions and the pressure to fit into the wider culture. It can be overwhelming at times, but we're not alone in this journey. One thing that has really helped me is finding small ways to incorporate our rituals into my daily life. Whether it’s lighting a candle for the soul or taking a quiet moment for reflection, these practices keep me grounded. I’ve also made a point to connect with other Mandaeans nearby — even just sharing a meal or talking about our experiences can lighten the burden of feeling different. Knowing that there are others who understand the nuances of our culture makes navigating these expectations a bit easier. Another approach some of us try is to educate our friends about Mandaean traditions. It can be daunting to explain our beliefs, especially when they might seem unfamiliar to others. But many people appreciate learning and sharing in our culture. I’ve had some great conversations that have not only deepened my friendships but also created a space where I feel comfortable being my authentic self. Of course, there are days when the pressure feels heavy, especially during cultural celebrations that might not be recognized by the wider society. On those days, it helps to reach out and connect with someone from our community. Just knowing that someone else is feeling the same way can be a huge relief. Sometimes, just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference. Anyone else navigating this balancing act? I’d love to hear what’s been working for you in embracing our traditions while adapting to a different culture.
