How do you navigate cultural expectations while trying to be true to yourself?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the struggle of balancing cultural expectations with the desire to be our authentic selves. Growing up within the Mali community often means facing a web of traditions, values, and family expectations that can feel heavy at times. We might find ourselves torn between honoring our heritage and embracing who we truly are, which can lead to feelings of guilt, confusion, or even isolation. One thing that’s helped me navigate this tricky path is finding a safe space to express my feelings. Sharing experiences with others who understand this struggle can be incredibly validating. I once connected with a few people in my community, and we started meeting regularly to talk about our individual journeys. Just having that group where we could openly discuss our challenges made a world of difference. It reminded me that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Another approach some of us try is setting small boundaries with family and friends. For instance, if certain cultural practices don’t resonate with us, we can respectfully communicate that. It doesn't always go smoothly, and sometimes it feels daunting, but these conversations can lead to deeper understanding and acceptance over time. It’s about finding that balance without completely distancing ourselves from our roots. We also can take baby steps to incorporate aspects of our culture that we love while gently pushing against those that don’t fit our identity anymore. Maybe it's celebrating a holiday in a way that feels more comfortable or creating new traditions that honor our roots while allowing for personal expression. It's a process, and many of us are still figuring it out. Anyone else juggling these cultural expectations while trying to stay true to yourself? It can feel overwhelming, but sometimes just sharing with someone who gets it can lighten the load. What’s been your experience?
