Navigating family expectations during festivals and celebrations as a Maheshwari

Many of us know that navigating family expectations during festivals and celebrations can feel like walking a tightrope. As Maheshwaris, we often find ourselves balancing our own feelings with the traditions and expectations that come from our families. It can be overwhelming, especially when we want to honor our heritage while also staying true to ourselves.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to create space for my own preferences amidst family traditions. For instance, during Diwali, instead of going along with every single ritual and gathering, I started suggesting smaller get-togethers with just close family. This way, we still celebrate, but on our terms. You might find that even one small shift can make a big difference in how you experience the festivities.
Another approach many of us have tried is being open about our feelings with our families. It can be tough to express that while we love our culture, we sometimes feel overwhelmed by the expectations. I found that when I shared my thoughts with my parents, they were surprisingly understanding. It opened up a dialogue where we could discuss what parts of the celebrations truly matter to each of us, allowing for a more meaningful connection.
Connecting with fellow Maheshwaris who share similar experiences can also lighten the load. I met a couple of friends from our community who also feel the pressure during festivals. We started a little group chat where we vent and share tips on how to manage family expectations. Just knowing that we’re not alone in this makes it so much easier to cope.
So, how do you navigate family expectations during our festivals? Anyone else feeling the weight of these traditions? Sometimes just sharing our stories with someone who gets it can bring a sense of relief. Would love to hear your experiences!
