Does anyone else feel pressure to conform to traditional gender roles within our community?

Does anyone else feel that weight of expectation when it comes to conforming to traditional gender roles in our Lingayat community? It can be overwhelming at times, right? Many of us have grown up with these clear-cut ideas about what it means to be a man or a woman, and it can feel like a heavy burden to navigate.
One thing I’ve noticed is how often we’re pushed into specific roles based solely on our gender. For instance, many of us might feel pressured to follow certain career paths or to prioritize family obligations over our personal aspirations. It’s like there’s this unspoken rulebook that tells us how we should think, act, and even feel. This can create a lot of internal conflict, especially when our true selves and desires don’t fit neatly into those boxes.
Another approach I’ve found helpful is connecting with others who are also questioning these norms. I reached out to a few friends who share similar feelings, and we started having regular conversations about our experiences. Just knowing that I wasn’t alone made a huge difference. We could share our struggles, laugh about the ridiculousness of certain expectations, and even brainstorm ways to carve our own paths within the community. If you can find even one person who feels similarly, it can really lighten that load.
It’s also important to remember that it’s okay to challenge these norms. Many of us are redefining what it means to be part of the Lingayat community on our own terms. Whether that’s embracing careers that aren’t traditionally accepted or choosing paths that prioritize our mental health and individuality, we’re all on this journey together.
So, what about you? Are you feeling the pressure to conform? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you navigate this. Finding others who understand can really make a world of difference.
