Navigating family expectations during traditional festivals as a Lingayat

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Festival season can feel like a double-edged sword for many of us in the Lingayat community. On one hand, there's the joy of celebration, the vibrant rituals, and the delicious food. On the other hand, there's the weight of family expectations that can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if you’re navigating your own beliefs or struggles. One thing that has helped me is being open about my feelings with my family. It might seem daunting at first, but sharing how certain traditions make me feel can create understanding. For instance, during festivals like Mahashivaratri, if you're feeling disconnected from certain rituals, explaining that to your family can lead to more supportive conversations. Many of us have found that just expressing our feelings can ease that pressure, even if it doesn’t change everything overnight. Another approach some of us take is finding small ways to participate that feel comfortable for us. Maybe instead of participating in every ritual, you could focus on one or two that resonate with you. This way, you're still part of the celebration, but it feels less like a chore and more like a genuine expression of your identity. Personally, I've found that lighting a diya and saying a prayer feels meaningful, while skipping the more elaborate rituals helps me maintain my peace. Connecting with others who share our experiences can also be a game-changer. I found a few friends in the community who feel the same way about family expectations during festivals. We started a small tradition of checking in with each other during these times, whether through a quick message or a casual meetup. Just having that space to talk about our shared challenges has made the hard days feel a bit lighter. Navigating family expectations during traditional festivals can be tough, but remember, you’re not alone in this. Anyone else feeling the pressure during this festival season? I’d love to hear how you’re managing it and what’s helped you find your balance.
