Navigating family expectations as a Lingayat in a changing society

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of being caught between tradition and the pressures of modern life. As Lingayats, we often find ourselves navigating family expectations that can feel heavy, especially when society is changing so rapidly around us. It’s like walking a tightrope, where we want to honor our roots but also carve out our own paths. One thing that has helped me is finding ways to communicate openly with my family about my choices. It’s not always easy, and honestly, there are moments when it feels like I’m speaking a different language. But sharing my perspective—whether it’s about my career, relationships, or lifestyle—has made a difference. Many of us have had those tough conversations where we explain how our identity as Lingayats shapes our decisions while also embracing change. It’s about showing that we can respect our traditions while still being true to ourselves. Another approach that some of us try is involving our families in our journeys. For example, if you’re pursuing a career that might not align with traditional expectations, consider sharing your passion and the reasons behind your choice. I’ve found that showing my family what I love and how it fits into my identity has helped bridge the gap. It often leads to more support and understanding, and even some family members have surprised me by embracing my choices. The isolation can be tough too, especially when we feel like we’re on our own in this balancing act. Having even one person in your life who truly gets it—a friend or even a cousin—who understands the weight of these expectations can make a world of difference. I started meeting with a few Lingayat friends regularly, and we share our experiences and frustrations. Just knowing that we’re not alone in this journey helps lighten the load. Anyone else dealing with the push and pull of family expectations as a Lingayat? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands can change everything—what’s your experience been like?
