Navigating friendships when they don’t understand my relationship with my partner

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating friendships can feel like walking a tightrope, especially when those friends don’t quite understand our relationships with our partners. Many of us have experienced that moment when we realize our friends just don’t get it. Whether it’s the nuances of our identities or the dynamics of our relationships, it can be isolating when we feel misunderstood. One thing that has helped me is being open about my experiences. When I notice a friend struggling to comprehend my relationship, I try to share little snippets of what it's like for me and my partner. For instance, I might explain the importance of feeling affirmed in our identities or how our love is shaped by navigating a world that often doesn't get us. It’s often surprising how much a simple conversation can bridge that gap—many times, friends just need a little context to understand better. Another approach we can try is to find community within our friendships. Sometimes, it can feel like an uphill battle when our partners don’t fit the mold of what our friends expect. Connecting with other LGBTQ+ folks has been a game-changer for me. Finding people who have similar experiences—whether through local meetups or online groups—has really helped me feel less alone. And when I’ve introduced my partner to these friends, it’s often been a beautiful way for them to see our love in a new light. We might also face moments of frustration when our friends unintentionally make insensitive comments or assumptions about our relationships. It’s important to remember that many people are just learning, and having a supportive friend in our corner who’s willing to learn can make a world of difference. If you find yourself in this situation, try to gently call out those comments. Sharing how they make you feel can help your friends understand the impact of their words. Anyone else navigating this tricky friendship territory? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference—what’s been your experience?
