How do you cope with the stigma and misconceptions about being part of the Leatherworker caste?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Leatherworker caste deal with the weight of stigma and misconceptions that come with our identity. It can feel isolating, especially when people don't understand the artistry, skill, and passion that go into what we do. We often encounter assumptions that reduce our craft to mere hobby or fetish, which can be frustrating and disheartening. One thing that has helped me navigate this is finding spaces where I can connect with fellow Leatherworkers. Sharing our experiences with others who truly get it makes a world of difference. For example, I recently joined a local group where we gather to talk about our projects and the challenges we face. Having that support system has empowered me to embrace my identity more fully, and it’s uplifting to be around people who admire the craft rather than judge it. Another approach I've found valuable is educating friends or family who genuinely want to understand. It's tough when we feel like we’re constantly in defense mode, but sharing the history and significance behind Leatherworking can shift perceptions. Whether it’s talking about the cultural importance or showcasing the skills involved, these conversations can help bridge that gap. You might find that some people are more open-minded than we expect, and they appreciate learning something new. On days when the stigma feels heavy, I remind myself of the pride I take in my work. Creating something beautiful with my hands, whether it’s a bag or a piece of art, reaffirms my identity. I try to focus on the joy it brings me and seek out those who appreciate it, even if it's just one person at a time. Connecting with someone who shares that passion can really lift the spirits. Anyone else feeling the weight of misconceptions lately? It can be tough, but sharing our stories might help us all feel a little less alone. What’s been your experience?
