Have you ever felt that sinking feeling when someone just doesn’t get your identity? Many of us in the Kuki community have faced misunderstandings from friends or colleagues that can leave us feeling isolated or frustrated. It’s tough when people make assumptions or simply don’t take the time to understand what we’re going through.
One thing I found incredibly helpful was to have open conversations when misunderstandings arise. For example, I had a colleague who made some offhand comments that felt dismissive about my experiences. Instead of letting it slide, I decided to gently explain why their words stung. It turned out they had no idea how their comments affected me, and that conversation not only cleared the air but deepened our connection. Having even one person who’s willing to listen can make a huge difference.
Another approach some of us try is sharing our experiences through small group discussions or even casual hangouts. I started meeting regularly with a few friends who understand this journey, and it’s been such a relief to talk openly about the misunderstandings we face. Sometimes just knowing that someone else has been through the same thing helps us feel less alone.
It’s also important to recognize that misunderstandings can come from a place of ignorance rather than malice. Educating those around us—whether it’s friends, family, or colleagues—can sometimes shift the narrative. You might find that sharing articles or resources about Kuki identity can open up more understanding and compassion.
Anyone else dealing with misunderstandings about your identity? I’d love to hear your experiences and what strategies have worked for you!
