Navigating cultural expectations while trying to stay true to my identity as Kuki

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Kuki community know the struggle of navigating cultural expectations while trying to stay true to our identities. It can feel like walking a tightrope between honoring our heritage and expressing who we truly are. Sometimes, it feels like there’s an unspoken pressure to conform to certain traditions or behaviors that don’t reflect our individual experiences or beliefs. One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of fellow Kukis who share similar feelings. We started meeting regularly, and just having that space to talk about our experiences made a huge difference. We share stories about moments when we felt pulled in different directions—like when family expectations clash with our personal values or when we face misunderstandings about our culture from those outside our community. Just knowing that others face similar challenges can be so validating. Another approach that’s been useful is giving ourselves permission to redefine what being Kuki means to us personally. It’s okay to hold onto some traditions while letting go of others that don’t resonate. For example, I’ve started incorporating modern elements into cultural practices in a way that feels authentic to me. This blend has helped me feel more connected to my identity without feeling suffocated by expectations. We might also find that having open conversations with family about our feelings can create a supportive environment. It’s not always easy, but sharing our perspectives can help bridge gaps between generations. Many of us have found that when we explain our choices and how they connect to being Kuki, our families can become more understanding. Anyone else navigating these cultural expectations? It’s tough, but sometimes just talking to one person who gets it changes everything. Would love to hear what’s worked for you!
