Many of us in the Koya community know the weight of societal expectations. Whether it’s the pressure to fit into certain cultural molds or to excel in ways that feel unattainable, it can be overwhelming. We might feel like we’re constantly being pulled in different directions, trying to balance our true selves with what others expect from us.
One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of fellow Koya who get it. We started meeting regularly, sharing our experiences and frustrations. Just being able to voice those feelings made a huge difference. It’s comforting to know we're not alone in feeling this pressure, and it often leads to practical strategies for coping. For example, we’ve talked about setting personal boundaries with family and friends who may not understand our unique paths. Learning to say “no” when something doesn’t feel right is empowering.
Another approach some of us have found useful is embracing our Koya identity more openly. It can be scary, but sharing our stories on social media or in community spaces allows us to connect with others who face similar struggles. It’s incredible how many people resonate with our experiences, and it opens the door to deeper conversations and friendships.
Sometimes, it feels like we’re in a constant battle between who we are and who others want us to be. On tough days, I remind myself that it’s okay to take a step back and prioritize my mental health. Practicing self-care, whether through art, journaling, or even just taking a walk, helps me reconnect with my authentic self.
Anyone else navigating this pressure? It can be tough, but sharing our stories can lighten the load. What has helped you cope with societal expectations? Let’s talk about it!
