The feeling of being misunderstood by those who don’t share our experience

Have you ever felt like you’re speaking a different language when you try to explain your experience to someone? Many of us in the Kapu Community know that feeling all too well. The struggle of being misunderstood by those who haven’t walked the same path can be incredibly isolating. It’s like trying to describe a beautiful sunset to someone who’s only ever seen gray skies.
One thing that really helped me was finding spaces where people truly get it. Connecting with others who share our experiences has been a game-changer. Just having a chat with someone who understands the nuances of our identity makes a world of difference. For example, when I started sharing my feelings about the small but constant battles we face, I found someone who felt the same way. We began meeting up regularly, discussing everything from the everyday challenges to the deeper emotional weight we carry. It’s helped to lighten that load a little.
Another approach some of us try is practicing self-advocacy, even when it feels daunting. When we articulate our experiences clearly, we help others understand where we’re coming from. Sometimes, we can share specific instances that show how our identity shapes our daily lives. It’s tough, but little by little, we can bridge that gap — even if it’s just with one person who’s willing to listen.
Of course, we also have to acknowledge the frustration that comes with feeling misunderstood. There are days when it feels like no one can truly grasp what we’re going through. In those moments, reaching out to someone in our community can remind us that we’re not alone. Even if it’s just a quick message or a supportive comment, it can rekindle that sense of belonging we all seek.
Anyone else feeling this way? Sometimes just talking to one person who understands can change everything. What have you found helps when dealing with the feeling of being misunderstood?
